‘When I think about it, I don’t half collect some sh*t’ – Nan.

Connor Coulston (B.1992, Oldham, UK) is a ceramic artist with a fascination for the kitsch objects and ornaments that normally collect in our Nan’s homes. Whether it be through a giant gummy bear adorned with Spice Girls lyrics or a reinterpretation of a ceramic poodle bearing witness to his relationship with his mother, Connor’s contemporary ‘granny kitsch’ ornaments aim to entertain and arouse both excitement and nostalgia in his viewer.

Coulston’s seemingly fun and lighthearted work acts as a preface to lull his audience into a false sense of security with each object tackling much darker issues, from child poverty to sexuality and social status to class and identity. Autobiographical references can be seen throughout his work, with each piece offering an insight into an element of Coulston personality; commenting on his Nan’s love for Nigel Farage and UKIP as well as his mother’s depression. Working with a variety of media Coulston creates immersive installations of intricately crafted ceramic and glass objects. By pairing these with found objects the viewer is encouraged to question ideas of value and explore the concept of legacy. After all, what was once a cherished ornament, with pride of place in someone's home can easily end up in the bargain bin in the local charity shop.
